Grand Electric: Dawn

Grand Electric is a new duo project that explores the sonic possibilities of the electric guitar and grand piano. The duo was created out of the desire to expand the boundaries of chamber music by fusing acoustic and electric realms. From the opening notes of Aurora, through the dynamic vigor of Take Chants, to the contemplative expansiveness of Image and Gravity, each piece reflects our creative journey. We aspire for Dawn to offer listeners an experience imbued with wonder and possibility.

About the Music:

Aurora by Mark Dancigers

“Aurora” is a meditative journey from stillness into energy and light. The gradually building music uses layers of looped guitar rhythms and harmony, and features vibrant solos for the piano and the electric guitar. Shifting colors of sound converge into a cascading, virtuosic finale.

Take Chants by Aaron Wunsch

“Take Chants” invokes the ancient spiritual resonance of chant melody and the driving energy of rock, uniting musical genres forever separated by space, time, culture, and worldview. Drawing from chants by composers including Hildegard of Bingen and Wipo of Burgundy, the piano and electric guitar exchange melodies and rich harmonizations in a continuously unfolding drama. Rapid passagework flourishes throughout “Take Chants”, generating momentum that moves towards joy.

Image and Gravity by Mark Dancigers

"Image and Gravity" creates an immersive sound world where the electric guitar and piano are mirror images of each other, often playing together in a constant rhythmic unison. The piece features detailed and linear development of phrases, exploring hypnotic qualities and meanings. In this opening section, the guitar plays scales and melodies in natural harmonics, while the piano glows with broader harmonic resonances.
